There are so many St. Patrick’s Day crafts out there — shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold — but this one literally pops out 😀
This printable leprechaun craft turns a color-by-number activity page into an original 3D paper craft for St. Patrick’s Day. Kids color the pieces, cut them out, and build a leprechaun popping out of his hat.
And once it’s done, you can even fill the hat with chocolate coins and turn it into a sweet little St. Patrick’s Day gift.

A Creative St. Patrick’s Day Activity
This printable leprechaun craft is a cute and easy St. Patrick’s Day idea, suitable for kids ages 5-8. It doesn’t require any special materials — just paper, scissors, glue, and coloring supplies. I recommend using cardstock for printers, but normal paper works too. Once finished, the 3D leprechaun stands up on its own, ready to hold your golden chocolate coins.

How to Make the 3D Leprechaun Hat Craft
Below you’ll find the step-by-step instructions for making this Leprechaun paper craft. There are also pictures to show you how it comes to be.
Supplies*:
- The printable PDF (available to subscribers — sign-up box at the end of this post)
- Printer
- White cardstock for printers (for best results)
- Glue (I use glue stick for a mess-free craft)
- Safety scissors for kids (or regular ones if it’s safe)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils (I use alcohol based markers)
- A ruler (optional – it’s helpful for folding)
- Chocolate coins to put inside the hat (or plastic coins)

Steps:
1. Print out the PDF of this craft. It includes two pages.

2. Color All the Pieces according to the color-by-number key.

3. Cut Out the Pieces: The round hat base, the long strip (this will become the top of the hat), and the leprechaun’s front and back.

4. Build the Hat: Take the long strip for the top of the hat. Spread glue on the side tab and roll it into a round hat shape.
Next, fold the small tabs inward. Spread glue on them and stick the hat onto the center of the hat’s base.

5. Prepare the Leprechaun: Before gluing the front and back together, fold the bottom flaps upward so the dashed lines are hidden inside. These flaps with form the base that helps the leprechaun stand.
TIP: place a ruler along the dashed line and fold the flap over it to keep the fold straight.

6. Glue the Front and Back Together: Glue the front and the back sides of the leprechaun to each other back-to-back – but avoid the folded flaps. These flaps need to spread out so the leprechaun can stand upright.

7. Glue the Leprechaun Inside the Hat: Spread glue on the bottom of the folded flaps. Insert the leprechaun into the hat cylinder and press the flaps down against the inside bottom of the cylinder. Hold for a few seconds until it sticks.
Now your 3D leprechaun is popping out of his hat.
8. Fill your leprechaun’s hat with chocolate coins. Now you’ve got the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! ✨🌈
