A Hanukkah Activity for Kids to Make and Display

I love crafts that children can enjoy making and then actually use or display afterwards. This one works as both a Hanukkah activity for kids and a pretty decoration for the holiday.

The house comes with lots of little decorations to cut out and glue wherever you like, including Hanukkah menorahs, dreidels, gelt coins, sufganiyot, candles, gifts and other Jewish and seasonal symbols.

I included familiar Hanukkah symbols in the craft, so it can be more than just a holiday-themed activity. Kids can talk about what the different symbols mean as they decorate, or connect them to Hanukkah traditions, like placing the menorah in the window for others to see.

The printable craft also makes the activity very easy to set up at home. You don’t need to plan a complicated project or gather lots of craft supplies. The house pieces and decorations are all included in the printable template. Just add paper, scissors and glue.

And then there is the decorating side of it.

Gingerbread houses are naturally festive. They are colorful, detailed and just seem made to sit out on display during the holidays. So it makes sense that Hanukkah gingerbread houses have become a thing too.

I wanted this one to feel unmistakably Hanukkah while still having that cheerful gingerbread-house look. The house has lots of blue and white, with touches of brighter colors to keep it playful and festive. Once it is finished, it makes a really pretty DIY Hanukkah decoration for a shelf, table or mantel.

How to Make the Printable Hanukkah Gingerbread House

The house itself is surprisingly simple to put together. There are only five main pieces: four walls and one roof.

Once the basic paper house is assembled, the really fun part begins. Kids can choose from all the Hanukkah decorations, cut out their favorites and glue them anywhere they like.

The craft is best suited for ages 6 and up. Younger children can enjoy it too with a little help from an adult, especially with cutting and assembling the house.

The printable comes with step-by-step photo instructions, so the full assembly is easy to follow once you have the template in front of you. Below is a quick look at the crafting process.

More Printable Hanukkah Crafts and Activities

If you need more ideas for Hanukkah activities for kids, I have a few other printable items in my shop that you might enjoy too.

One of my favorites is my printable 3D Hanukkah menorah craft. Kids color the hanukkiah first and then build it into a standing paper menorah. There is a separate paper candle to add for each night of Hanukkah, so children can “light” their own menorah each evening in a creative and completely flame-free way. It also looks lovely on display.

For a smaller project, I also have a set of printable Happy Hanukkah cards to color. There are three card designs, plus a matching printable envelope template. Kids can color, cut and fold the cards themselves, then give or mail them to family and friends.

Another option is my 3D dreidel box craft. Kids color the mandala designs, cut and fold the dreidels into little boxes, and then fill them with Hanukkah gelt or another small surprise. They can be used as a craft, gift box and Hanukkah decoration all at once.
