3D Flying Witch on a Broomstick – Printable Craft for Kids

I was scribbling ideas for a new printable Halloween craft for kids, and ended up designing a cute 3D witch flying on her broom! The process of making this paper witch was surprisingly simple, so I knew I had found a winning craft for Halloween that both kids and grownups will love.

This printable witch on a broomstick craft is made from paper, but a few simple folds give the witch a 3D shape. Add a string for hanging, and she becomes a fun Halloween decoration that looks as though she’s flying through the room.

Kids can color their witch any way they like, and stye her hair in different ways, so every finished witch can have her own personality.

3D flying witch on a broomstick printable craft for kids, a fun Halloween paper craft to color, cut, assemble and hang as a decoration.

How to Make the Paper Witch on a Broomstick

Materials:

  • The printable Witch on a Broomstick template (available to subscribers — sign-up box at the end of this post)
  • White printer-friendly cardstock for best results
  • Safety scissors for kids (or regular scissors, if appropriate)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils (I use alcohol-based markers)
  • A ruler (optional, but helpful for folding)
  • A small hole punch
  • String for hanging the flying witch
  • Colored or plain paper for the hair and broom bristles
  • Glue (I used glue stick)

💡A little folding tip: Place a ruler along the dashed line and fold the paper over it to help keep the fold straight.

Steps:

1. Print out the free template on White printer-friendly cardstock. Regular paper will work too, but cardstock is sturdier and gives nicest results.

2. Color the pieces with crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Carefully cut out each piece.

3. Fold the Broom’s Handle along the dashed line, folding outward so the dashed line stays visible. Keep the folded (closed) edge at the top. This fold helps give your witch her 3D shape!

4. Fold the Main Body Piece along the dashed line, folding outward so the dashed line stays visible.

5. Put glue on the back side of the witch’s body, but not behind the tabs at the bottom. Glue the two matching sides together, back to back, leaving the bottom tabs unglued.

6. Attach the body to the Broom’s Handle: Spread glue on the inside of the two tabs at the bottom of the body. Hold the Broom’s Handle with its folded (closed) side facing up and place it between the tabs of the witch’s body. Position the tabs over the spot marked “Glue body here”, then press them in place.

7. Fold the Dress Piece along the dashed line, folding outward so the dashed line stays visible. Fold the small tabs outward too.

Before gluing, wrap the dress around the witch’s body. Make sure the middle dashed line of the dress is at the witch’s back, and the bottom corner of the dress lines up with the Broom’s Handle, so the witch looks like she is sitting on it.

Once you’ve found the best position, spread glue on the small tabs of the dress, tuck them behind the dress, and stick them to the witch’s neck.

8. Add the arms: Match each arm to the correct side of the witch. The thumb should point upward.

Fold the shoulder tabs backward so they sit behind the arms. Spread glue on the shoulder tabs and attach the arms to the witch’s shoulders.

Put a little glue on each palm and glue the hands to the Broom’s Handle. Let the arms curve outward a little instead of pulling them flat. This adds to the 3D effect!

9. Make the hair: Cut strips of paper and glue them to the witch’s head where it says “Glue hair and hat here.” You can use colored paper or color plain paper yourself. No need to use cardstock for this, regular paper works well for the hair.

10. Make the hat: Fold the flaps on the hat pieces upward so the dashed lines are hidden inside the folds.

Glue the hat pieces back to back with the witch’s head sandwiched between them (make sure the hat buckle points toward the witch’s front). Leave the brim unglued so it pops out to the sides.

11. Add the legs: Glue each leg to the inside of the dress, with the colorful side of the leg facing out.

12. Add the broom bristles: This is similar to making the hair. Cut strips of colored paper and glue them to the end of the broom.

Cover the glued ends of the bristles with a small piece of paper for a neat finish.

13. Ready for takeoff! Punch a hole in the witch’s hat and thread a piece of string through it for hanging.
