Sinterklaas 2018 is coming!

If you live in the Netherland or in Belgium you are probably getting ready for this fun, kids-friendly holiday. To many, Sinterklaas (a.k.a St. Nicholaas) is equivalent to Santa Clause, and the holiday of Sinterklaas (on December 5-6th) is pretty much another version of Christmas.
Is it?
I wouldn’t know. I’m team Hanukkah!

Sinterklaas is not familiar in my country, yet I got to know (and love) him. How?
My grandmother was Dutch, and she brought Sinterklaas into our childhood. She would teach us the song “Sinterklaas kapoentje”, bring us speculaas cookies and S shaped chocolates from Holland and tell us about Zwarte piet, Sinterklaas’ black helper, long before anyone noticed the racist issues around his character.

Coincidentally, Sinterklaas kept creeping into my life as an adult too, through my Belgian husband. My husband is also the reason why I celebrate Christmas in Belgium every year and have a Christmas tree at home (the other reason is that Christmas trees are gorgeous and fun to decorate).

So Sinterklaas stayed in my heart and on my sketching pad. Maybe you found some of my Sinterklaas illustrations out there, as they are available on stock photography website. I think this one is my most popular, followed by this one.
